We aim to award transparent publishing contracts with competitive royalties and varied advances plus 25 copies to 2 exceptional novellas per year and provide a dedicated launch team to craft a tailored, robust launch and marketing campaign. Please read through the manuscript eligibility requirements and full submission guidelines before submitting your manuscript.
Eligible Manuscripts include previously unpublished novellas totaling 50-120 pages or around 10k-35k words. We consider “published” to mean work that has been traditionally or self-published in any print and/or digital format.
We are drawn to evocative, raw, poignant, and powerful pieces of substance and style.
Pluck at our heartstrings, speak to our souls, send shivers down our spines, shine a light on our darkness, and uncover our unspoken truths.
When building your submission, please adhere to the following guidelines. We do not accept AI-generated work and require a statement certifying that generative AI was not used during the creation process. We will auto-decline submissions without such a statement or disregarding the following guidelines. See our AI policy for more info.
We require you to submit the following separate documents.
Document #1- Your Manuscript
—An eligible and previously unpublished collection manuscript saved as a .docx file of no less than 50, but no more than 120 pages or around 10k-35k words.
—Start each piece on a new page.
—Please be sure to strip identifying information from your manuscript document.
—Include your manuscript title in the header of each page.
—Number your pages.
—Page size 8.5×11, with all margins set to 1 inch.
—Use 12pt Times New Roman or another comprable serif font.
—Please double space.
—Images- Please do not include any art or images in your submission. You’ll have ample opportunity to discuss art and imagery with your publishing team should your manuscript be accepted. Your writing needs to stand on its own.
Document #2- Your Cover Letter
Your cover letter should introduce both you as the author of the work and the work itself. Please keep this under two pages. Be sure to list your website and any social media handles you have. Next, include a brief statement certifying that you didn’t use generative AI to create or assist in the creation your manuscript.
Finally, include your contact information as follows:

—Legal Name (for internal uses such as accounting and contracts)

The Prize Packages— Each selected manuscript’s author will be awarded a transparent and competitive publishing contract with Shadow Dog Press Independent Publishing House that includes a cash advance, (payable upon signing,) royalties, and 25 author copies; marketing & promotions, a multi-page feature in The SDL Review. Up to 2 prize packages will be awarded, though every manuscript submitted is considered for alternate offers of publication.

Rules, Restrictions, Terms, and Conditions
The 2026 Editor’s Choice Award adheres to the Shadow Dog Literary Inc. Mission Statement and the CLMP Contest Code of Ethics. The contest is organized and administered in a three-phase format.
Phase I— Submission period. Submissions run from 4pm Et April 10th, 2025 through 11:59 pm EST November 10th, 2025.
Phase II— The Selection Process. Reading of manuscripts may commence no earlier than November 11th, 2025, however, in adherence with Shadow Dog Literary Inc.’s nonprofit mission statement of commitment to Publishing Excellence and maintaining high editorial standards, a minimum threshold of submissions must be met to commence the selection process. In the event that the threshold is not met by the end of the submission window, the window will be extended in 30-day increments until the threshold is met. At least one submission will be selected. The number of additional selections is based on the overall quality of the submissions received and the total volume of submissions received within the current prize cycle submission window.
Phase III- Notification Period— Decision notifications are to be sent out no later than the 25th of February 2026 provided the submission window runs as scheduled. Should the submission window need to be extended in accordance with the rules above, this date will also be adjusted. All submissions will be answered. Decisions are delivered via email. before the 1st of February 2026. Selections will be announced on Shadow Dog Group’s social media channels. The Shadow’s Call newsletter, and in The SDL review. Selected manuscripts will be slated for release throughout the second half of 2026.

For the Editor’s Choice Awards, in furtherance of our quest to publish rising underrepresented, disadvantaged, and otherwise disenfranchised writers from beyond the academic sphere, we do not separate the creator from the creation by blind reading manuscript submissions.
