We asked each other casually
If we’d recently met other people
While pretending the answers bore no impact
On the rest of our conversation.
It’s become a tradition for me
To meet the perfect person at the wrong time
Like a museum patron gazing at a portrait
Painted 90 years ago.
She theorized herself into oblivion –
Maybe I’ll do this, maybe I’ll do that –
Whereas me myself was happy
With the love I already knew for sure.
Perhaps I wouldn’t mind being a rock star spouse
Expecting frequent dalliances
But not particularly bothered
Because I’m the one they come home to.
Anyhow, we continued to discuss noteworthy encounters
Even though none of them compared
With the warm trustworthy blanket
Spread across our trembling legs.
